Claire Beauchamps is an ex-combat nurse just recently reunited with her husband Frank Randall after the second world war. When they visit Craigh na Dun, an old stone circle, Claire is propelled back into the 18th century in the middle of a Scotland-England war. There, she confronts many dangers that threaten her life but Jamie, a young Scot, plans to help her... and steal her heart.
Written in an absolutely beautiful prose and an exceptionally rich vocabulary, it was a delight to read Outlander. I had the feeling that Gabaldon did a lot of research before writing the book because the setting was so well described . The violent scenes didn't particularly bother me because when you read this book, you really have to place yourself in the 18th century when norms, values and moral standards were very strict. My only complaint would probably be that there is way too much sex in this book. I really don't mind a couple of steamy scenes here and there but this was going on for a good quarter of the book which made the action and story line slow down considerably. Other than that, be ready for an action-packed novel.
