Mae just wants to go to parties on weekends, occasionally make out with her boyfriend, get wasted and high and live a carefree life. When her boyfriend attempts to rape her, a young man by the name of Daniel intervenes and saves her. As they spend more time together, Daniel and Mae get to know each other and become friends until the day Daniel rapes her and disappears. Ashamed to denounce her situation to the police, Mae cuts up her face to keep people away from her. Just when she thinks that she can continue with her life, Daniel kidnaps her and locks her in his house. He then uses torture to break her until she gives up her soul...and perhaps even something more valuable to him: her life.
The Decimation of Mae was an extremely dark book filled with pain and horrifying situations. It has everything involved from human trafficking, to rape, to physical abuse, to cancer, but leaves you with such an strong feeling that is love (or Stockholm syndrome if you prefer). It was perfectly well written in a way that it ripped my heart to pieces and scattered the remains in the four corners of the world. Mae's defiance, even after all the torture and beatings, awes me. I'm glad that Mae even forgave him in the end because regret is probably one of the most destructive feelings that you can have and you can only feel so much of it before it takes away your mind and soul. The ending was absolutely sad and brilliant. Filled with numerous twists and turns, The Decimation of Mae will surprise any reader who dares to venture in the dark to meet the Devil himself.
"The devil wears many masks Mae."
I smiled at him."And an angel has many personalities."
