Uhtred is an English boy from Bebbanburg born from an aristocratic family in the 9th century. When the Danes invade their territory and kills his whole family, Ragnar, a Dane, adopts him and treats him like a son. Ragnar trains him to be a warrior and they win battles after battles, slowly invading all England. They lived happily until the day that Kjartan decided to burn Ragnar's house to the ground in order to seek revenge for having shamed his son Sven a couple of years back when the son tried to rape Ragnar's daughter, but it was too late. His adopted family had died in the fire. Taking his family's inheritance, he pledges his allegiance to King Alfred the Great and is obligated to fight back those who he once considered family. Torn by both side between his roots and his childhood adopted family, Uhtred has to fight for what he thinks is right...for destiny is everything.
The writing was compelling thought I have to say that I wanted a little more love between Uhtred and Mildrith (sorry for pouring my inner girl here). It was very centered on the wars and the debaucheries and I just think that a little more feeling would make the book excellent. The character development was well done. They were all so likable and different from one another. It made me understand that being good or bad is really a matter of perspective.
Overall it was quite an enjoyable read. You should read it too.:)
