When Cleo's entire family was murdered by Mannix, the king's adviser, Clio has inherited the powers of her mother, the Oracle of Sheehan.
Now hunted by Mannix, Clio seeks refuge in Sheehan's sister city, Morek, by dressing up as a slave. If anyone discovers her identity, she will have her heart cut out as a sacrifice to the Deities on top of the pyramid. Clio has no choice but to win the trust of Riece, the prison's guard that won't hesitate to kill her if he discovers who she truly is. But the visions she sees are of Mannix bringing up a barbarian army into Sheehan and she's the only one that has the power and foresight to stop him. Can she embrace her destiny and sacrifice everything for her city?
~Contains Spoilers!~
Wow. I don't recall ever reading a book in the POV of an Oracle before, but now that I have, the only thing I can say is that was so enthralling. I really loved how Cleo used her powers for a greater good and even though she wasn't able to save everybody, I'm glad that she stood up for the innocent slaves. The writing was fluid and very easy to read. Yes, there is a love triangle and yes the ending was so surprising that it left me rocking back and forth in my corner in absolute denial. (HA! LIES. Riece can now be mine. Muahahah. )
The thing is I don't understand where did the Oracles come from? How did it happen? Why does Cleo suddenly have fighting skills that come with the power? Why can't she predict her own death? Also, I don't really get it. If the Oracle can't have any lover, how the fuck are they to have kids? I don't know how it works in your world there but I'm pretty sure that it goes like this: Girl+Guy+Sex= Child. I don't know there. I might be wrong. *shrugs* So many questions are left unanswered. The world building needs a bit more work.
Although I thought that Cleo was a little naive at times, I had to constantly remind myself that I'm dealing with a fifteen year old here. Hopefully, she'll have time to wisen-up in the sequels and be even more of a bad-ass.
I liked it a lot. Definitely recommend it.
