Emma is a very smart and sweet girl. She participates in every club in her school and gets top-notch grades but her life is far from idyllic. She lives with her aunt Carol who always severely beats her up and threatens to kill her and George, her uncle who doesn't particularly care about her. With the help of her friends, Emma tries to break free from the chains of hell that Carol wrapped so tightly around her neck.
While the ending was not very satisfying, I kind of assumed that there had to be a sequel but I still think that this book was great due to all the mixed emotions that it made me feel. My only complaint is that I do wish that someone took the matter in their hands and helped Emma earlier instead of letting the situation get to that point. The story was a little repetitive and slow towards the middle though I bet the rest of the series will probably be that way too. Also, I wanted to seriously hurt Carol at the end of the story.
